Netballs Controversial “Chairlift” Photo

Northern Mystics goal keep Anna Harrison’s acrobatics and my photograph have been the talk of the netball world since the game against the Melbourne Vixens. The “chairlift”, as it has been dubbed has divided the netball community.

My photo of the rugby union lineout-style lifting manoeuvre has been published world wide and in every single major New Zealand newspaper over the last few days giving the trans-Tasman championship a massive publicity boost.

2012 Logie Awards

I was assigned to cover the 2012 Logie Awards again this year for Getty Images.

The red carpet arrivals only lasts from 4:30pm to about 6:00pm, but it is one of the most frantic 90 minutes of photography you can do! Celebrities of all grades walk the red carpet, and it is my job to somehow get their attention and get them to look in my direction for a photograph, or capture any kind of image of them. The only problem with this is there are about 50 other photographers, dozens of TV channels, videographers, reporters and journalists all with the same idea!

This year there were only a few ‘big’ international stars to attend, and I was lucky enough to be the only one in the right spot at the right time to capture two of the biggest, Seal and Delta Goodrem enjoying a big sloppy kiss. While not a great photograph, it is a great one for the gossip columnists to make up something up about. Both are newly single. Goodrem, and Nick Jonas split in February while Seal, is currently negotiating his way through a bitter divorce with supermodel Heidi Klum. The photos have already been used all across the world. Us Weekly fanned the flames with the headline, “Seal Gives Delta Goodrem a Passionate Kiss,” and other outlets like The Mirror reported that Heidi Klum’s ex “appears to have a new blonde on his arm.” The Daily Mail wrote that Delta and Seal “both showed they were single and ready to mingle as they shared a red carpet kiss as the 2012 Logie Awards in Melbourne”.

Interview with Camera House

http://www.camerahouse.com.au/blog/index.php/award-winning-shooter-scott-barbour/

Award-Winning Shooter Scott Barbour

What’s your earliest photographic memory?
Probably the excitement of opening the packet of prints after my first rolls of film had been developed, and flicking through the prints to see how they had all turned out. It was a magical experience. I am 34 years old now, but I am astounded by how much photography has changed in my time.

How did you become a photojournalist?
In 1999 I moved to Sydney to become a staff photographer for Allsport, which was later to become part of Getty Images. During my time at Getty Images I spent six years in London covering a variety of news, sports and entertainment assignments, including the Sydney and Athens Olympics, the British Royal family and the 2005 Tsunami in Asia… Photojournalism has always interested me. I like the variety and how every day is different.

What are the challenges you face shooting an assignment?
One of the greatest challenges is to capture the key moments in the event, whilst at the same time transmitting photographs on my laptop, so that customers can access my images as quickly as possible.

What’s the most demanding situation you’ve been in to capture a shot?
Probably when I was photographing a cricket tour in Pakistan in 2004. News broke that Osama Bin Laden may have been, or was about to be, captured by the Pakistani army in Pakistan’s tribal region. I happened to be in a city that was near the border of this region, so I was asked to leave the cricket and head into Pakistan’s northwest tribal region of North Waziristan and see what was happening. Many people were carrying large guns over their shoulders, and didn’t seem too keen on having their photograph taken.

Could you tell us the backstory to your Nikon Walkley Awards Daily Life Feature Photography entry?
Spring in Melbourne brings the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Having done a fair bit of horse racing over my time, I really enjoy covering these racing meetings. As you can imagine, a typical day of coverage consists of photographing all things horses and racing, and after a while, it can become a bit repetitive. I find the best and most rewarding images can be found at the end of the day.

So, after the last race has run, after I have finished shooting the newsworthy images of the day, I load my gear in my car, take a single camera body and go for a wander… As anyone who has attended a race meeting will know, a lot of racegoers arrive looking a million dollars and leave looking a little worse for wear, after a full day of drinking in the sun!

I shot this particular image at Crown Oaks Day at Flemington Racecourse in November 2010, the last race was over, the light was good and the racegoers were more relaxed. So much rubbish was left behind that as soon as the race was over a large flock of seagulls engulfed the track to scavenge. The two racegoers walking hand in hand completed the picture.

Irish Examiner. I Took That…….

A photograph I took, and an interview with me about it was featured in the Irish Examiners ‘I Took That…..’ section in their newspaper.

What and where: “Predag Trajkvoc falls in the mud after swinging across the Piranha Pit as he competes in The Tough Bloke Challenge in Melbourne, Australia. The Tough Bloke Challenge is one of the most gruelling adventure runs in Australia, consisting of 18 obstacles over a 6 km cross-country course laden with thick mud pits and ice cold water crossings.”

Circumstances: “I came across this event on the internet and asked to cover it on behalf of Getty Images, as I was pretty confident that it would make for some good photographs. I normally cover professional sports for Getty Images, where you are limited in terms of the positions that you can stand in to take photos. It was great to cover an event where I could go where ever I wanted.

The Piranha Pit was one of the 18 obstacles. I photographed competitors swinging across the pit one by one for about 90 minutes. In that time only 3 people fell in. This was one of them.”
Equipment: “Canon EOS 1-D Mark IV camera. 16-35mm f2.8 Canon lens at 24mm,1/1000 second at f 4.0  with an  ISO: 3200.”

It works because: “The splatter of the mud looks great, however this really works because you know that, less than half a second later, the poor guy is going to be completely submerged in a pit of stinking mud! I sensed it was a pretty good picture straight away so, as he slowly picked himself up and emerged covered in mud, I asked if he would give me his name for the caption. He was only too keen to do so and I wonder if he now regrets that, after this photo has gone around the world!”
